Gastronomy and design go hand in hand

What are the links between gastronomy and design? How are these two creative matters related?

Interior design and gastronomy are disciplines that are built with very different materials, but which connect when they share the same space. They are indisputably related when it comes to providing a specific character to a restaurant that needs to be compatible with its kitchen. The food served and the design of the premises are fed back and evolve together, since both require a minimum of creativity to get out of the ordinary and surprise diners with a unique atmosphere. According to chef Juan Antonio Medina “without a product, there is no kitchen; without tradition, there is no vanguard”.

What if interior designers and chefs work together in the creative process? By bringing both visions together, it is possible to design spaces where dining is not only presented as an experience for the palate, but as a combination of sensations that complement the whole process. Visiting a place that has been previously thought to accompany a specific style of cooking can turn into a memorable gastronomic experience.

Everything revolves around the eyes of the diners, for a restaurant to work is not enough with a good interior design, you need to understand the business, the type of cuisine and the target it is aimed at. It is also vital to find the balance between functionality and aesthetics, as well as taking care of the privacy of the space. The comfort that the guests feel depends on several factors such as acoustics, lighting, air conditioning, furniture and décor chosen. Depending on how you play with all these elements, the space can become anything from a warm and familiar environment that makes you feel like in your own living room to the possibility of quickly transporting you to other cultures.
